About:
Albenza is used to treat infections caused by worms. Albenza works by keeping the worm from absorbing sugar (glucose), so that the worm loses energy and dies. It is is used to treat: hydatid disease (echinococcosis); infection of the nervous system caused by pork tapeworms (neurocysticercosis).
No special preparations (fasting, laxatives, or enemas) or other steps are necessary before, during, or immediately after treatment with Albenza.
How Taken:
Take it exactly as it was prescribed. Albenza is best taken with meals, especially with food containing fat, to help your body absorb the medicine better. In some infections, additional treatments with this medicine may be needed at 2-week intervals to clear up the infection completely. Do not miss any doses!
The dose of Albenza will be different for different patients. The number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are taking Albenza.
Missed Dose:
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses!
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency immediately.
Storage:
Store Albenza at room temperature, in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Albenza out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Side effects:
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Albenza.
Common side effects: headache; nausea; stomach pain; vomiting.
Severe effects (it is recommended to call your doctor): allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dark urine; decreased urination; fever, chills, or sore throat; red, swollen, peeling, or blistered skin; severe or persistent dizziness or headache; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision changes; yellowing of the eyes or skin.
